Biography
Matthew P. Pinckney is the Founding and Managing Partner of his South Carolina-based law practice, where he focuses on federal and state criminal defense, immigration law, and civil rights matters. With more than two decades of legal experience, Matthew has built a reputation as a dedicated, creative, and effective advocate for clients facing complex and high-stakes legal challenges.
Licensed to practice in South Carolina and Pennsylvania, as well as before the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit and multiple federal district courts, Matthew brings a broad and sophisticated understanding of both state and federal legal systems. He has successfully represented clients in a wide range of matters, including serious felony cases, immigration issues, and constitutional claims.
Before founding his firm in 2009, Matthew served as a City Prosecutor and general practice attorney, where he handled hundreds of criminal cases, conducted dozens of trials, and argued appeals. His early career experience provides him with valuable insight into both sides of the courtroom.
In addition to his civilian legal practice, Matthew has an extensive record of military service. His military career includes roles as a Defense Counsel with the U.S. Army Trial Defense Service, where he successfully defended service members in courts-martial and administrative proceedings, and as a Rule of Law Advisor in both Afghanistan and Colombia, working to strengthen judicial systems and support counter-terrorism prosecutions. He also served as a U.S. Department of Defense legal advisor for the United States Southern Command (USSOUTHCOM) in Colombia, providing guidance on international law and criminal justice reform initiatives.
Matthew is fluent in Spanish and is deeply committed to serving diverse communities. He has led outreach efforts across South Carolina to educate and assist Latin American immigrants with legal issues, ensuring access to justice for underserved populations.
He earned his Juris Doctor from Temple University Beasley School of Law, where he participated in the Immigration Law Clinical Program. He received his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from The Citadel, graduating with high academic distinction.
